Why is it that the Democrats use to be in control of the South and had no chance in the Northeast but now...

...It is almost the other way around? Why is it that the Democrats use to be in control of the South and had no chance in the Northeast but now...
Because the Republicans of 50 years ago and the Democrats of 50 years ago were alot different in party platform. Why is it that the Democrats use to be in control of the South and had no chance in the Northeast but now...
for about 100 years the south hated the republican party. because of abraham lincoln and the civil war. the republican party didnt exist here.

the south is a conservative area. in the 1960-70's the democrats became a party of civil rights and liberal ideas. the south switched over to the republicans, because they were the more conservative .

i am not as knowledgeable about the northeast. i suspect the democrats appealed to the heavily union working class of the NE. also NE people supported civil rights in the south.
If you were to look back 40 years ago or so, you'd see that the Democrats, or ';Dixiecrats'; as they were called back then, had little in common with the Democratic party of today. After Reagan took office and religion was really introduced into the fray via issues like abortion, birth control, and gay rights, Republicans were able to capitalize on their so-called family-values stance (LOL) and pick up most of the Southern religious right. I also think Carter might have had something to do with it, just a hunch.
Things change. Why is it that one of the greatest Democrats ever once said ';Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country'; and now everything from Democrats is about how the government should step in and take care of everyone's problems, i.e. universal health care.
Not sure, but it's an interesting question. I think a lot of it has to do with social conservatism, which is way stronger in the south.

I think also southerners resent some of the regulations/restrictions that dems support. Right now I live in Texas, and the people down here still refer to the civil war as ';The War of Northern Aggression.'; That says it all.
Because the Dems have abandoned the principals of the party and have gone so far left in idealology that the party isn't even recognizable now. And that is a sad thing to me.
Because the Democrats were not always so liberal.
It's always been the other way around as far back as I can remember.
New York will not vote for Obama! Hillary got our vote but we won't give it to that racist pig!!!!!!!!!!!! Cross the party line McCain08'
