There's a sick-acting bat on my porch, no animal control, what to do?

It's laying on the front porch, in full sun. It has moved a few inches over the past hour, so it's still alive. But it's likely it has rabies or is sick, since it's unusual for them to be out or grounded during the day. The mailman walked right next to it and it didn't move.

We DO NOT have Animal Control in our county, it was cut from the budget 5 years ago. My wife is 6 months pregnant and I don't want to do anything that could expose her or the baby. (And she's actually the one who is brave around all animals...)

Should I wait for it to die then scoop it up in a garbage bag? Or what??There's a sick-acting bat on my porch, no animal control, what to do?
Rabies not transferable to humans?

The guy who said this should be thrown off answers for stupidity.

First.Do not bury it! Parvovirus comes from the ground and it would contaminate your area worse.

Second!!!!.If it is in the LAST stages of rabies(obviously). You can still get rabies from a simple scratch just picking it up.Even after it is dead.

Lastly.Humanely move it to a dark area to die or humanely put it down.Maybe use a shovel to move it. I cannot recommend a way to put it down.

I would then throw it in the garbage to avoid contaminating your area.

This might sound cruel but your own pets are at risk.

Good luck with your problem and remember,no contact with this animal. There's a sick-acting bat on my porch, no animal control, what to do?
I would not attempt to touch it unless it is dead.

They have to many diseases.

I would leave it alone until death unless you have some way to scoop it up into a container and move it
I'd scoop him up in the dustpan and dispose of him for safety reasons.

If you have a strong stomach you could do a mercy killing first, preferably with something you don't plan on using again, maybe scrap wood or something.
firstly

i'm dont think '; Rabies '; are transferable to humans, so if it does have rabies it wont harm you, your wife or your soon to be child.

secondly, where do you live?! no Animal Control?

and what you should do is call the cops, they have to deal with things like this since they got rid of animal control, they'll fix it up i'm sure :)

First, don't touch it or let a pet touch it. Even after it dies.

Then call your local Health Department and tell them about it.

If you get no help, scoop it up with a shovel after it dies and bury it at least a foot deep where it won't be disturbed.
first DON'T touch. the bat could be a carrier of rabies. call the cops to come get. then call a vet on how best to clean your porch so that it doesn't contaminate your shoes that will carry in house. it doesn't take a bite from bats all it takes is to touch it to spread rabies..
Call the cops. Since the Animal Control unit got phased out then it would be their responsibility now.

Any animal shelters in your area? They might have someone on call also, or maybe call a vet.
call the police station and they will have to come and get it. Thats their job now since the animal control is no longer existant. Hurry before the poor thing suffers any longer. They will know what to do with it. Good luck. We also dont have animal control here and thats why I say its the police you need to call because that is who we have to call also. Maybe putting it in a towel and a container and taking it to a vet or humane society and having them do whatever is neccesary for it?? Thats the only other thing I can think of if the cotton picken police department wont even lift a finger. Jeez where are they when someone gets bit?? Thats just not right. I feel for you and wish the best of luck.....
Call the department of conservation. This is what they do.
